Araks' Petra Malliot - The perfect

Chic Suit for Summer

May 14, 2008, New York - As I flip through my pile of magazines I suddenly realize that there is a growing trend among the coverage. All of the major fashion magazines, Vogue, Elle and Harper's Bazaar included are approaching losing weight from a different angle. Women have obsessed over their weight for years through intense exercise and eating routines and now there seems to be a sudden shift toward the anti-diet/less-exercise movement.

I recall one particular article from last month's Vogue where the writer recounted how as an avid exerciser, logging 6-days a week consecutively for 10 years, she quit cold turkey and hasn't looked back. She concluded that we spend hours trying to squeeze in our gym time and forgoing other important moments in our life which only ultimately increases our hunger and therefore our waistlines. We might be better off we exercised less and ate less, which would happen more naturally if we weren't starving our bodies after a 6 mile run in the morning. Less exercise simply put, equals less hunger.

I believe in everything in moderation although that's not always what I practice. I hope that with the summer months approaching that women can let go of some of the anxieties around donning a bathing suit. Instead of logging 6 hours a week on the treadmill, let's cut back to 3. Let's aim to instead enjoy summer activities such as lounging poolside or taking an evening walk. And who knows, you might even be one of the lucky ones and find that you have a decreased appetite with less exercise in your regiment.

This summer season there are loads of cute bathing suits to choose from, but I personally am going to stick with this chic Araks one piece (pictured left) which I've had my eye on for awhile now. It will be my simple summer suit and then I'll mix it up with this brightly colored VPL one piece that is oh so striking. Hopefully we'll all learn to let go a bit this summer and enjoy the summer months instead of sweating inside a gym. That's what I plan to do. Happy summer! --Nadine Ferber

Summer Shoes and the City

May 28, 2008, New York -  Before we strap on our Manolos and see Sex and the City: The Movie when it’s finally released next week, let’s talk about summer shoes.  When not trotting around the city in 4-inch stilettos like Carrie Bradshaw, New York ladies must find the perfect pair to compliment every warm weather occasion.  As we sadly banish our boots the back of the closet - few other styles work so well in every situation - we must choose wisely from the rest of our shoe collection.  Surprisingly enough, summer shoes can me more complicated to figure out than their winter, weather-dependent counterparts.  With impossibly hot temperatures and the freak thunderstorm now and then, a summer shoe has to be as versatile as they come.  And while we’d all love to put on our Havaianas in June and not take them off until September, the colorful, rubber flip-flop just doesn’t fly for every summer circumstance.

When faced with such a dilemma, the first question that must be asked is how high, or how low, do we go?  If height is what you like, the Rachel Comey Gatsby Woven Heel (pictured) is positively chic and stylish, seemingly drawing inspiration from the life of those West Egg residents of whom Fitzgerald wrote.  While heels are a necessity for many nighttime affairs, they do not always compliment our favorite short, summery dress in a way that doesn’t come off as a little too risqué for the office or a picnic in the park.  Flat sandals, on the other hand, have the elegance of a strappy heel with the functionality and comfort of a flip-flop.  They are elusive, not totally being season-appropriate until the warmest temperatures have arrived, yet maintaining the leg (or is it foot…) -up on the flip-flop for an open-toe look.  Check out Gryson’s latest pairs, specifically the thong sandal (pictured), which combines a casual silhouette with the sophistication of a sturdy, leather shoe.

Both Rachel Comey and Gryson round out their summer footwear collections with a range of sandals in natural and bright colors, most of which can be incorporated into an endless number of outfits.  Each are the perfect addition to the dresses, skirts and even shorts that will grace the women of New York and beyond in the coming months.  Despite their inherent usefulness, there is one thing we do know for sure.  The flat sandal won’t have made its big screen debut next week, because nothing takes a girl out of her Manolos in the city that is the home to Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha.  Nothing. -- Nicki Donato
